Optimising your content for social media doesn’t need to be overwhelming, in fact there are some simple things you can start doing right now to make your content stand out from the crowd, let’s take a look through them together.

Resize Your Images

One image size doesn’t fit all platforms on social media and your posts should reflect this across all of your channels. Always resize your images to suit the platform you’re using to avoid your carefully crafted images distorting. Here is a handy guide to what size images you need for the major platforms:

Facebook – 1200 x 630 pixels

Instagram – 1080 x 1080 pixels

X (Twitter) – 1024 by 512 pixels

LinkedIn – 1200 x 627 pixels

Use the Correct Format for Posts

All platforms have certain guidelines for text and it’s well worth taking note of these to optimise your content when it goes out. Here’s what to expect on the main platforms:

Facebook – Facebook has a character limit of 63,206 on posts although many wouldn’t use anywhere near all of them on one post.

Instagram – Instagram is 2,220 characters max including hashtags but try to stay more visual with posts on this platform using image and video more heavily than text.

X (Twitter) – For a basic X account, the character limit sits at 280 characters in keeping with the rapid, conversational nature of the platform.

LinkedIn – LinkedIn allows up to 3000 characters including spaces and punctuation unless it’s an article post which brings the overall limit up to 125,000.

Make Your Usernames and Branding Consistent

If you’re using more than one social media platform, make your usernames consistent across all of them to allow your customers or followers to easily find you if they need to. When you’re designing your images and text for social media, try to keep your posts on brand so you are easily and instantly recognisable to your audience.

Post Frequently

Optimise your feed! I have talked regularly over the years about avoiding a ghost town social media and posting frequently to your social media channels can help you to avoid this. Try to plan out what you will post in advance so you have content hitting your platforms on a consistent basis to keep you top of mind with your audience.

Don’t Neglect Your Profile

Your profile is often the first thing people see about your business, so don’t waste the opportunity to let your followers know what you are all about. Use all of the space available in your profile section to tell your followers all about you, what you do and more importantly, what you can do to help them and solve their problem.
